Gravelly Point Park

A small grassy park at the end of Reagan National Airport's main runway. Every few minutes a commercial jet descends directly overhead at about 200 feet. It's louder than you expect and closer than feels entirely normal.

Why it's worth going

It's genuinely hard to describe to someone who hasn't been. You sit on the grass, the Potomac is right there, the DC skyline is in the background, and then a 737 comes in so low you can read the airline livery without squinting. Then another one lands, and the cycle repeats without getting old.

Families come here specifically for this. Adults end up staying longer than they planned.

What to know

Check the arrival flight tracker beforehand (FlightAware works well) to confirm the runway is active. Parking is free on site. The spot sits on the Mount Vernon Trail so you can bike in from DC. No facilities on site, bring what you need. It's technically in Arlington, about 10 minutes from downtown DC by car.
